Lucuma, also called “gold of the Incas”, stands out for being an excellent natural sweetener. Originally, from the Andean valleys of Peru, it is mainly used to make sweets, desserts and ice cream. Lucuma favors digestive well-being and contains large amounts of antioxidants, including beta-carotenes, these are precursors of vitamin A, essential for cellular health and responsible for stimulating the repair of cell damage and growth of new cells.
Lucuma powder can be used as a substitute for sugar in pies, cakes, and other desserts or baked goods.
Its texture is comparable to granulated sugar, but its taste is more similar to that of brown sugar. You can use a 1:2 ratio by volume to substitute brown sugar for Lucuma. For instance, use 1 cup of Lucuma for each 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
Still, you may need to experiment a little, as it may not work the same for all recipes.
Lucuma is also a popular flavoring for dishes like ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal, and smoothies to provide a hint of natural sweetness sure to please adults and children alike.
